QuickSilver's
Final Hour
by
Snowy
The
day on Quick Silver began as usual. We were snug and comfortable
in our beautiful homes. We gathered wool and cotton and other fruits
of the land and cast the evil beings when they crossed our paths,
or actively sought to put them to rest permanently. It was an almost
idyllic time for us. We were prosperous and growing stronger each
day.... we thought... One of our group determined to spend the day
in Delucia and waved as she cast her spell of recall. Then, only
moments later she sent a message to us all. Delucia was not there.
Or at least it was not visible. The entire region seemed to have
slipped into a cavernous black space. We quickly warned Lord Wind
of what she had found, and he went to investigate.
His words were chilling when he called us moments later: "Meet
me at the Castle British.". . . and we all went. The four of
us who were present at that time stood in silence as he announced
that certain death awaited the land. It would be a matter of only
a few hours at best.
"I can cast wardings which will give us slight respite, but
the end is inevitable," he said. "Quick Silver cannot
be preserved. Indeed... none of us will survive as we are this day.
The best I can offer is that it will be quickly done. There will
be no looking back. You may go to your homes and look around to
say goodbye, but in one hour, it all will be gone. I am able to
cast preserving spells upon your persons and your banked goods,
but nothing else can be salvaged."
We looked at each other horrified, then closed our eyes and nodded.
"It will be difficult times ahead. If you stay to aid me in
the work, we may be able to create a land which will be warded against
such darkness befalling it. Are you with me?'" Lord Wind sat
quietly on the throne awaiting our answers.
As one voice we spoke. "We will stand by you. The land will
rise as a Phoenix, shining in the sun."
"It will be a thankless task, and a long one," he said,
with a wry smile. "But I welcome your aid and your company.
You will be the core of our new land. You will be the vanguard and
we shall build a land which will not succumb to such decay. We must
be vigilant against that which can pull us apart and never allow
this to occur again!"
One after the other, we four stated in our own words that the deed
had best be done quickly and went to our respective homes to bid
farewell to the goods and comforts we had accumulated. Then we met
again at Castle British, where Lord Wind told us the spell he had
set to destroy our destroyer was preset and even our last hour of
life there was to be as if it had never occurred.
"In one hour, meet me again here. But, be warned, nothing will
be as it was. Those who wake in the morning here, will no longer
be here, but another land, and homeless, bereft of most of their
worldly goods."
And we closed our eyes and waited...
One hour later, we did meet Lord Wind again at Castle British, in
the new land he had created for us, Silver Mist. Then he bid us
to go out into the lands and see that all was as it should be, and
he set a spell to restore to those citizens who had lost their homes
and worldly goods, should be recompensed by grant of money to their
bank accounts to help them rebuild, if they decided to remain to
aid in the building of the land.
And so, Silver Mist was born, and we four GMs and Lord Wind went
out to build it into the grand land we had hoped Quick Silver would
have been and, yes, even better than it had been.
We four rebuilt some of the most beautiful landmarks of Quick Silver
from sketches we had quickly drawn in that one hour of respite,
and reminded ourselves that losses of properties are terrible, but
the loss of our friends was the bigger loss. We made a vow to be
watchful for those who would chip at our foundations. Now it is
more than a year since these events, and the land of Silver Mist
is growing more glorious each day. It was a sad day for us all,
but it rooted deeply in us all how very important it is to preserve
the integrity of our precepts. Silver Mist will live and thrive
as long as Lord Wind stands in the shade of his mighty trees, ever
watching for threats to our home.
I have visited the splinter world which now holds some former citizens
of Quick Silver. They too are building upon the ashes of the past,
but my real home is here and always will be.
