Candied apples and witches' hair,
Flaming trees and days so fair,
You'd think that summer's come again
with hot bright light and shady lane.

Angelic faces in devils' masks,
Falling leaves and chilly blasts
Of frost-kissed winds that make you seek
The new log fire, a warm retreat.

Popcorn balls and candy corn,
Grass yet green and flowers born
In orange and gold and reddish-brown
To match October's tree-leaf crown.

Goblin grins and trick or treat,
Yellow moon and leaf-strewn street
That soon will glisten with rain wind-tossed,
Ah! winter comes and summer's lost.
