At Day's End

Lights flickered in the night,
As the sun dipped out of sight,
The kitchen was put to right.

School work was all done,
Playtime over, the end of the fun.
Water was heated, baths were run.

Mothers turned beds down
And laid out a dressing gown
For children all over town.

By Daddy's side we snuggled,
Hearing tall tales for which we prodded,
Stories told as heads nodded.

Little ones were carried drowsy to bed,
On downy pillows to lay their head.
After all their prayers were said.

Parents crept quietly away,
To their own time for play,
An hour to talk and discuss the day.

Lamps blown out all over the town,
Crickets and frogs the only sound.
Quiet like velvet all around.

Another day of children's laughter,
Put away to remember ever after.
